As political activities gather momentum in Delta State, the police have assured the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of continued security support to protect voters, electoral officials and election materials during electoral activities across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Samuel Erale, gave the assurance on Wednesday when he received the Delta State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Sir Etekamba Udo Umoren, during a courtesy visit to the State Police Headquarters in Asaba.
The assurance comes as concerns over electoral security remain central to efforts to ensure that eligible voters can exercise their civic rights without fear, intimidation or disruption.
Umoren said the increase in the number of state constituencies was expected to attract more contestants, making stronger security arrangements necessary to guarantee peaceful and credible elections.
He lauded the police for providing security during the recent Udu Constituency by-election.
He noted the importance of effective collaboration between INEC and security agencies in protecting the electoral process.
The REC also assured the police command of INEC’s readiness to share relevant information to support security planning, safeguard public safety and ensure the smooth conduct of electoral activities.
Erale, in his response, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order and providing adequate security for electoral activities throughout the state.
He stressed the importance of professionalism, neutrality and sustained cooperation among security agencies and electoral stakeholders in creating an atmosphere conducive to peaceful elections.
The collaboration, both institutions indicated, would be critical to protecting the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that voters, electoral personnel and other stakeholders can participate without undue fear.
