Widows benefiting from the Delta State Government’s Widows Welfare Scheme have received their October stipends, extending the administration’s monthly financial support to vulnerable women across the state’s 25 local government areas.
The latest disbursement is part of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s social intervention programme aimed at cushioning the economic challenges faced by widows, many of whom struggle to cope with financial hardship and family responsibilities after the loss of their spouses.
Speaking with journalists, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Social Investment Programmes, Chief Dr Isioma Okonta, commended Governor Oborevwori for maintaining the scheme and ensuring that beneficiaries continue to receive their monthly support.
Okonta said the regular payment reflected the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable groups and translating the people-centred objectives of his MORE Agenda into practical interventions.
He noted that many of the beneficiaries depend on the monthly stipends to meet basic household needs, cater for their children and cope with the prevailing economic challenges.
According to him, the scheme has provided a measure of stability for thousands of widows across Delta State, assuring them that their welfare remains a priority of the state government.
He said the governor had demonstrated through the initiative that government must remain responsive to the needs of people who require assistance, particularly those facing difficult circumstances.
Okonta urged the beneficiaries to make prudent use of the money, adding that they should continue to support the administration with prayers as it pursues its development agenda.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the state government for the timely payment, describing the monthly stipends as a welcome intervention that helps them attend to pressing family needs.
They commended Governor Oborevwori for sustaining the programme and remembering widows across the state, while praying for God’s continued strength and wisdom for the governor to do more for the people.
The continued disbursement of the stipends underscores the role of targeted social welfare programmes in providing a safety net for vulnerable households, particularly at a time when the rising cost of living has placed additional pressure on family finances.
For many of the beneficiaries, the monthly payment represents more than financial assistance; it is a reminder that their circumstances have not excluded them from the attention of government.
